Statement by academic staff, School of Law, Makerere University on the current political crisis

The academic staff of the School of Law, Makerere University, have expressed concern over the proposed constitutional amendment which among other things, seeks to remove the presidential upper age limit of 75 years.

In a statement signed by 22 law dons, they said the amendment seems bent on favouring a single individual – President Yoweri Museveni – just like it was with the 2005 removal of presidential term limit.

They made several recommendations, key among which is that Parliament rescinds the motion allowing presentation of a Private Member’s Bill to amend Article 102(b).
