What is the role of Uganda’s media in local language preservation? Download this presentation made by Ms Pamela Batenga, a culture and linguistic specialist, made at ACME during a symposium for journalists on arts and culture reporting.
In it, she suggests these roles, among several:
- Sensitise the public on the state of Ugandan languages. Broadcast documentaries on the people’s and languages of Uganda;
- Encourage the speaking of our languages by using competitions, quizzes, etc;
- Journalists should learn at least three other languages. At the very least they should learn to read and write Kiswahili;
- Promote Ugandan languages as beautiful, not ‘local’.
